This March marks the tenth anniversary of the publication of Cheryl Strayed Savage, arguably the most popular and influential book on the outdoors in recent history. Classic memoirs recount Strayed’s 1995 hike on the Pacific Crest Trail following the crushing loss of his mother. It was the inaugural pick of Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 and has sold over five million copies worldwide. In 2014, the Hollywood adaptation released theatrically with Reese Witherspoon.
As Elizabeth Hightower Allen, host of the Outside Book Club, wrote during the presentation Savage as our March 2022 pick, the book “changed not just outdoor literature, but the outdoors itself.” It inspired a larger and more diverse group of people to try something daring and sparked a wave of hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail. To understand the lasting impact of Savagewe’re hosting a live Zoom Q&A with Cheryl Strayed Tuesday, April 5 at 6 p.m. MT– and we want you to join us. Allen will be moderating, but you will have the opportunity to ask Strayed your own questions.
