ANN ARBOUR, Mich. – Read banned books as part of Booksweet’s new banned book club.
The Plymouth Road bookstore will host monthly in-person meetings for community members to discuss books that have been banned from certain K-12 classrooms and libraries across the United States.
Teens and adults can participate Book club banned Shaun Manning, host and co-owner of Booksweet, for the first meeting on Friday, March 18, to talk about Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus. The Holocaust graphic novel recently made headlines when it was controversially removed from the public school curriculum by the McMinn County School Board of Tennessee.
Other book club reunions will include Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye”, Angie Thomas’ “The Hate U Give” and Sheman Alexie’s “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian”.
Meetings will take place between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on April 15, May 20, June 17, July 15, August 18 and September 16.

The monthly book club will also raise funds for the ACLU. Ten percent of the proceeds from the sale of the banned books will be donated in September at Booksweet’s Banned Book Week event.
Attendees must RSVP online, wear masks during in-person events, and will be required to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
