What’s in the crystal ball of Denver galleries this weekend? Lots of high quality art, including some of Denver’s favorites and beautiful artists we haven’t seen in a while. On the urban/street art side, the babes of Babe Walls will unveil a major collective exhibition, and a new exhibition is appearing at the ILA gallery.
In the meantime, the deployment of Mo’Print 2022 continues.

Night Lights Denver: Women’s History Month

Night Lights celebrates Women’s History Month by projecting the work of a dozen female artists on the Arapahoe Street side of the Daniels & Fisher Tower. Curated by Sharifa Moore, independent curator and executive director of Denver Digerati (producers of the Supernova Digital Animation Festival, returning in September), the looping program acts solely as a showcase for each artist’s practice. Whatever the task, these women rise to the occasion.

The inimitable Phil Bender, father figure of Pirate: Contemporary Art and giant of the Denver cooperative gallery community, comes out for a solo exhibition of “quilts”, a variation on the gridded collages of images or objects he has always made. Bender will be in the house on Saturdays throughout the run, including Saturday, March 19, when he will also host an artist talk. Bender’s work never gets old. Enjoy.

Photographer Morgan Leigh McKenna and clay artist Lori Dresner share their limb slits for working with the idea of portals as gateways for change, both in the physical sense, such as walking through a doorway into another room, and in a spiritual sense, like navigating a dream or personal transformation. In the East Gallery, artist, physician and neuroscientist Jaime Belkind-Gerson filters all three professions into a stunning series of manipulated photographs, using medical imagery superimposed on everyday imagery and various artistic media, then slowly tracking progress and/or deterioration with repeated repetitions. algorithms.

Artist couple Sushe Felix and Tracy Felix again show off their popular stylistic approaches to landscape painting – Sushe casts an elegantly formed modernist charm over her ubiquitous mountains and clouds, while Tracy’s similar subject matter takes on the shapes and the curved layers of a relief map or a Thomas Hart Benton. Presented together, their paintings complement each other and dialogue. In a nod to the Month of Photography, Betsy Margolius seduces with her mixed works combined with simple monotypes and linocuts, some superimposed with chine collé, to create patchworks of dense patterns, often inspired by nature.

Space Gallery presents the joyful abstract paintings in spontaneous compositions and explosive hues by Lynn Heitler, who says color has a voice that speaks to her when she paints. Alongside Heitler, versatile sculptor Charlie Wooldridge works in metal, stone, fiberglass, and more, to create metal prints and wall and floor sculptures with luxurious surfaces. A must at Mo’Print 2022, Mark Lunning’s Convergence — New joins the fray with a complex and dimensional new work. The Space Mo’Print show retiring Recent fine prints from Oehme Graphics is moving to the Space Annex, 95 South Cherokee Street, until April 9.

Artist Jason Middlebrook paints on cross-sections of polished hardwood in natural shapes, often in patterns that reveal the ridged wood between sections of applied paint forming stripes, zigzags, jagged or organic shapes that follow the rings exposed trees. For his second exhibition at DBS Gallery, he creates wood grain patterns through images of sky and clouds. In the Project Room, paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Emily Joyce for RGB and see I’m fine crack jokes in visual poems brought to life by mathematically calculated compositions, color studies and symbolic shapes. A feast for the eyes.

Three concurrent exhibitions are taking place this weekend at the BRDG Project, including abstract paintings by French-American artist Peggy Feliot-Jensen and Colorado artist Ron Trujillo, who favors drips, splashes and floral patterns in color combinations pleasant. The first part of the BRDG Project’s nod to young curators is also on view, featuring an exhibition of digital photography led by students from Jasmine Colgan and Alejandra Abad at CU Denver. Return in April for an all-new show from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, plus a performance by MSU Denver’s Repertory Ensemble.

Kelton Osborn defines himself as an experiential painter, driven by memory, visuals, intuition and an endless process of growth. The resulting works are rendered in an unbalanced patchwork of marks and irregular shapes reminiscent of an indistinct landscape seen from an airplane – the lost details of memory.

Firehouse is holding previews in its main and south galleries this weekend, starting with the Mo’Print show Mixed grain, documenting a collaborative printmaking project by master printmaker Art Gym Gregory Santos, who invites four artists from across the country every four months to create artwork on small mailed lithograph stones.
