Art installation of butterflies unveiled to commemorate impact of COVID-19

A colorful art installation featuring dozens of handcrafted paper butterflies by Rushcliffe residents has been unveiled at Rushcliffe Arena in West Bridgford as part of an exhibition commemorating the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The installation was curated by Rushcliffe Borough Council, in partnership with Lady Bay artist Belinda Poon, who worked with local groups to create the bespoke artwork, now prominently featured in the building atrium.

The butterflies were carefully crafted through a series of community workshops, with contributions from Jesse Gray Primary School in West Bridgford, BCreative After School Art Club, Metropolitan Thames Valley Residents Groups and FABS, a self-help group that offers support to families affected by suicide. .

The butterfly motif used in the installation was chosen as a symbol of change, renewal and endurance during the COVID-19 pandemic and will be on display until Friday, April 1.

Abby Brennan, Rushcliffe Borough Council’s portfolio holder for communities and climate change, said: “Throughout the workshops, participants reflected on their personal experiences of the pandemic, recognizing not only the difficulties of loss and isolation in difficult times, but also sharing inspiring stories of selflessness the giving and compassion of the entire borough.

“Now that we have this wonderful display by locals for locals, we hope our butterfly installation will brighten people’s day and give them a chance to reflect on the past two years when they visit Rushcliffe Arena.”

Belinda added, “It has been such a pleasure to work with community groups to create this thought-provoking art installation. The workshops enabled each participant to be creative in a social setting, sparking positive thinking and a sense of sharing.

“I am delighted with the butterfly designs, although there are similarities, each produced is individual, just like their creator.”

The installation is part of a number of COVID-19 memorial projects planned by the Council which also include the creation of a memorial garden in Bridgford Park and support for commemorations in parishes such as memorial benches and plans for planting.
