* The African American Children’s Book Project (AACBP) and The Literary Cafe Books and Events celebrate Juneteenth by highlighting the rich history and contributions of black people in the United States, as depicted in the books.
Vanesse Lloyd-Sgambati, Founder of the AACBP, said: “Reflecting on Juneteenth, I remember that during slavery, many states had anti-literacy laws that prevented anyone from teaching a black person, a slave. or free, to read and write. The punishment was fines, jail time and, in some states, lashes. So as we celebrate Juneteenth, let’s pay homage to our ancestors by reading and sharing the many books of black literary creators who tell of their accomplishments, their joy, their creativity, their genius, their ingenuity, their creativity , their inventiveness and their resilience.
Both organizations encourage people to support black bookstores by buying and sharing black books that celebrate black history. Black literary creators have produced some of the best books of our generation.
The Literary Cafe has prepared a long list of books on its online bookshop for preschoolers to young adults at https://bookshop.org/lists/juneteenth-celebrate-literary-freedom. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the books will support the work of the AACBP.
