Langley Secondary School Deleted Controversial Books Panel

McLEAN, VA – A sign calling attention to controversial books by some parents has been removed from the Langley High School library.

Fairfax County parent Carrie Lukas shared a display picture, which included about 10 books and a sign that read “stuff some adults don’t want you to read”. The display was in the library for an eighth grade parents night.

“What books a library holds is debatable, but it’s just ‘no nah!’ childishness,” Lukas tweeted of the display.

One of the books on display was “Gender Queer,” which, along with “Lawn Boy,” had been the subject of debate over whether the books should be in high school libraries. Fairfax County Public Schools initially removed both books and conducted a review due to complaints that the books contained child molestation and sexually explicit material. The books were returned to libraries after the FCPS determined that the books did not contain child molestation or material qualified as obscene as defined by Virginia law.

The Langley High School library display prompted an apology from the principal, who said the sign had been removed.

“We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. The sign was not in line with the beliefs of our school and school division,”
wrote Principal Kimberly Greer. “Poor judgment was used in its posting and I take full responsibility for it.”

Lukas is also one of three parents to file a lawsuit against Fairfax County Public Schools over its mask mandate despite Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s mask removal order.
