Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2012

The old, six-row barley Bere variety Barley has been brought to new life by Bruichladdich since 2005 in cooperation with the University of the Highlands and Islands. Tough grain provides lower alcohol yield than barley varieties, but convinces by retaining a malty sweetness in the distillate and a creamy texture.

The grain was grown by the Institute of Agronomy at Orkney College (UHI) in cooperation with Sydney Gauld (Quoyberstane) and comes from the 2011 crop. The previous crop of Bere Barley at Dunlossit Farm on Islay was abandoned as it proved extremely unprofitable.

In 2012, the distillation and filling the first filling American oak Ex-Bourbon casks (a mix of Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, Buffalo Trace and Clermont Springs) took place. The 10-year-old Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2012 was bottled without cold filtration in natural Color with a Alcohol content by 50% ABV.

Tasting Notes from Producer Orge Bruichladdich Bere 2012

Nose: Complex and seductive, there is a wonderful combination of fruity and floral notes on the nose. Oak reveals itself with tangy lime and green apple, followed by fragrant honeysuckle and creamy vanilla. The Bere barley offers a tangy robustness with notes of hay and barley sugar sweetness, with a note of peach growing over time drachma opens further.

To taste: The palate shows a tight texture and the classic aromas of Bere: cereals, apple pie and warm scones, compote and honey – melting into spicy notes of milk chocolate, gingerbread and marzipan in the aftertaste.

Bruichladdich Le Bio 2011
