Superintendent Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce awarded Superintendent of Schools Scott S. Brabrand the Eileen D. Curtis Lifetime Achievement Award. Presented March 31, the award recognizes the superintendent’s career in Fairfax County Public Schools.
In 1994, after volunteering for FCPS as part of a business partnership, Dr. Brabrand became a career mover. He left the telecommunications industry to become a social studies teacher at Herndon High School.
During his keynote address at the event, Superintendent Brabrand commended the chamber and several area businesses and community groups for their recent support of FCPS, including Allwyn Company, Bookworm Central, Capital one, Cornerstones, Cox Communications and Cox Business, Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation, SAP NS2and Western Fairfax Christian Ministries. He also appreciated the chamber’s engagement in recent referendums on school building bonds, thanking them for their support of public education.
The superintendent is leaving FCPS on June 30.

The Dominion Energy Northern Virginia Chapter of the African American Resource Group (AARG – NoVa) generously donated books to public schools in Fairfax County. On March 28, 2022, seven members of AARG – NoVa took the time to read some of the books to 5th graders at Cameron Elementary School.
Donated books promote diversity, equity and inclusion as well as the group’s mission to connect, empower, develop, engage and support the recruitment and retention of Dominion Energy’s African-American employees, while making valuable contributions to the company and the community.
A total of 705 books were donated and are being distributed to 141 elementary school libraries. Thanks to Dominion Energy and the AARG – NoVa team.
Free online tutoring coming soon!
All FCPS students will soon have unlimited access to online tutoring support services through Tutor.com free of charge! Funds to support Tutor.com for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years will come from an ESSER III Unfinished Learning grant.
Tutors will focus on developing the student’s strengths and abilities in reading, math, or other specified subjects. Services may be available before, during or after school hours and/or on weekends. Tutors are available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. Mandarin/Chinese and French will be available this fall.
Students will automatically have access to Tutor.com’s tutoring service unless a parent/guardian submits an opt-out request.

Workforce development program helps address shortage of firefighters
Northern Virginia departments are desperate to hire firefighters. Chantilly Academy helps to fill this void by training the next generation of firefighters. Seniors enrolled in the firefighting course at Chantilly Academy learn alongside recruits from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, work with state-of-the-art equipment, and receive valuable hands-on training.
Graduates of the FCPS firefighting course have gone on to pursue both volunteer and professional firefighting. At least eight returned to the Fairfax County Fire Academy after graduating and became Fairfax County firefighters.
