At Banksy Kate Moss (purple/orange) the artist pays homage to the iconic Andy Warhol The portraits of Marilyn Monroe, two serigraphs of which are also included in the sale. Bold, bright and blonde, Moss flaunts Monroe’s most signature attributes – her signature curls, flirtatious lashes, boldly defined lips and prominent mole. In addition to the layered features of Monroe, the addition of a solid, flat color in contrasting shades of purple and orange works to capture Warhol’s lively Pop aesthetic. Banksy uses the image of Kate Moss with the same intentions as its predecessor – the commodification of visual icons. Other works by the artist to feature in these auctions include Choose your weapon (dark purple), girl with balloon, Love is in the air and Napalm.

by Francis Bacon bullfighting mirror is a prime example of the artist’s controversial and famous depictions of bullfights. Bacon’s bullfights are composed in circular arenas and often contain, as in the current work, a concave mirror in which torero and bull clash and merge in a whirlwind of movement. This book is a complete set of four lithographs. Nine other works by Bacon will feature in the Evening & Day Editions auctions, including two self-portraits, a portrait of his close friend Lucian Freud and a triptych.

Coinciding with the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee, a group of works featuring the Queen, including a lithograph by Richard Princea screen print by Andy Warholand one giclée print by Chris Levine. Demonstrating a wide range of periods, styles and techniques, these works all celebrate traditional royal portraiture iconography and the celebrity status of Queen Elizabeth II. Richard Prince is widely recognized for his technique known as “re-photography” – a revolutionary appropriation strategy of photographing pre-existing images from magazine advertisements and presenting them as his own. In 1985, Andy Warhol became fascinated by the public’s infatuation with British royalty and immortalized the Queen in his contemporary aesthetic, transforming her into the celebrity he imagined her to be. Chris Levine’s work has been hailed by the National Portrait Gallery as “the most evocative image of a royal by an artist”, and by Mario Testino as the “finest portrait of the Queen”.

The Evening and Day Edition auctions include a selection of iconic David Hockney editions featuring a wide range of techniques. At Hockney’s My window drawings the artist depicts the view through his window over the seasons. Also included in Hockney’s selection of works are two of his Lithographic Pools, a subject widely identified as the artist’s most famous motif, embodying his fascination with post-war America and, in particular, the California hedonism. Hockney’s pools also serve as a metaphorical springboard for an in-depth inquiry that spanned decades of his career: the formal challenge of representing water.
