New York’s spring season continues with a blockbuster April auction taking place April 19-20 at 432 Park Avenue and June 25, broadcast live from Southampton, with bidding available in-person and online.

Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz, Vice Presidents and Co-Heads of Publishing, said, “2021 was a historic year for the publishing market as we achieved our highest annual total ever. The momentum continued into this year with a White Glove Evening Sale in London. Expanding our annual live auction calendar allows us to meet the ever-increasing demand from our collectors around the world for rare 20th century and contemporary prints and multiples. We look forward to presenting these additional live auctions, which will offer a breadth and depth of material rarely seen in the marketplace.

Leading the sale is an iconic lithograph by David Hockney, Swimming pool made with paper and blue ink for the book. Swimming pools became a staple of Hockney’s work early in his career. Flying to Los Angeles for the first time in 1963, Hockney looked out the plane’s window and was immediately captivated by the striking blue of the countless swimming pools dotted around the city below. Pool made with book paper and blue ink was created to accompany a publication on the paper pools series, emphasizing the interconnected nature of Hockney’s swimming pool imagery, despite the varied media he used.

KAWS’ What a party set of seven lithographs made in 2020 revisits the emblematic character of KAWS, Bidendum, The Michelan Man. These intimate Bidendum portraits feature the character with an older expression in seven different bold colorways. What a party is also the name of KAWS’ well-attended mega retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum.

A significant body of works by Cindy Sherman will also be on display. Covering the years 1970 to 2000, this selection of all Untitled Cindy Sherman’s photographs feature the artist as some of her most recognizable characters. Untitled, 1975 is from a series of portraits made by Sherman to show the process of transformation from one character to another. “At that time, I was just interested in using makeup on a face like paint used on a blank canvas. I was experimenting with several types of characters, that is, starting with an elderly person who then gradually became a drag queen.

Additionally, the March auction brings together fine examples of state-of-the-art printed abstraction and works on paper by renowned artists such as Ellsworth Kelly, Leon Polk Smith, Larry Zox, Nicholas Krushenick, Robert Mangold and Frank Stella. All made in the 1960s and 1970s, this sampling of images, all sharing a common formal language, sheds light on this flagship genre of post-war America.

Other highlights include edits by Francis Bacon, Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Bruce Nauman, Ed Ruscha, Peter Saul, Kenny Scharf, Andy Warhol, Kehinde Wiley and many more.
