The Witcher Season 2’s Shocking Death Is A Major Change From The Books

The Witcher season 2 is now streaming on Netflix, and as fans progress through the season they will notice a few changes here and there in certain characters and stories. Most are small changes, though in the early episodes fans will see one of the biggest changes of the season from the books, and it’ll probably shock them a bit. A character who is alive and well in the original story meets his end in Season 2, and we’re here to break it all down for you. That said, major spoilers follow from here, so if you haven’t watched the season yet, you’ve been warned. You can also grab our full Witcher CRAM here!

So after Geralt brings Ciri to Kaer Morhen, Ciri immediately encounters most of the Witchers. After settling down for a while, she then meets Eskel, who explains that he came back after a fight with a Leshen and has the arm he severed with him. He looks pretty rough and Vesemir and Lambert give him a hard time putting down a Leshy properly, and he grabs his shoulder as he leaves.

After the Witchers invite some women into the main hall for a celebration, Eskel and one of the women start kissing in an area away from the others, and when her jacket comes off you can see a large area on the upper back that has something sticking out of it, and the branches and vines suggest it has been infected with the Leshen.

We return to the main hall and suddenly the medallions on the medallion tree all start shaking, alerting of a nearby monster. All the wizards notice this and start searching Kaer Morhen, including Geralt. In another area, Geralt slices attacking vines but there are too many and they tie him to the wall. Then a creature emerges from the shadows as Geralt sticks his torch against the branches and vines, making the creature howl. We then see the creature rush under the table and when Geralt approaches he realizes that it is Eskel. Eskel says Geralt’s name but then attacks and they fight until Eskel pins Geralt to the table with vines.

Eskel says he came back to Kaer Morhen because he thought something was wrong and thought he could fight him, and during this he stabs Geralt repeatedly. He says he thought Geralt could help him and then goes to stab him again but Vesemir comes in and throws an ax at him and makes him crawl away.

Vesemir helps Geralt up and they stand back to back and slice through vines as they enter. Eskel tries to get through the door but Geralt signals her to hold him back before he gets slammed. Vesemir then throws a hook through him and attaches him to a chain while Geralt throws more hooks until he is secure. Vesemir tries to talk to Eskel and says they can save him, but Eskel grabs Vesemir and starts strangling and crushing him. He will die and Geralt must make the difficult choice to cover his sword in fire and drive it through Eskel’s chest, killing him in the process.

In the books, Eskel doesn’t die and in fact is also a different type of power than Leshens, so it will be interesting to see how fans react to the change.
