The World University of Design is celebrating the power of femininity this International Women’s Day by showcasing the works of 13 female artists, in an art exhibition titled The Power Within – The Power Beyond. The exhibition is curated by Akansha Wadhwani, Associate Professor, School of Visual Arts, WUD and on view at Gallery Art Konsult, Hauz Khas, New Delhi from Wednesday March 9 to Tuesday March 15, 2022.
The Power Within – The Power Beyond is a depiction of women coming together and presenting their perspective on the status of women in modern times in their own unique way. The exhibition is a set of works of art that are different from each other but that exude the same emotion, linked by the intention of delighting feminism for its specificity.
The works consist of paintings, prints, ceramics and sandstone presented by artists Arpana Caur, Dimple B Shah, Dipti Gupta, Dr. Sushma Yadav, Gayatri Apte, Kanchan Chander, Kavita Nayar, Manjari Sharma, Nalini Misra Tyabji, Nupur Kundu, Rini Dhumal, Usha Garodia and Vasudha Thozhur and Professor Rini Dhumal who received the Raja Ravi Varma Award for Excellence in Visual Arts from Fateh Singh Rao Museum at Durbar Hall, Laxmi Vilas Palace on the occasion of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Gaikwad Festival in Baroda.
Reaffirming the role of women and how they affect the lives of those around them, Professor SM Kulkarni (Dean of the School of Visual Art) says: “Women by nature beautify things around them , raise children as mothers (also in other roles), and are an embodiment of Goddess Saraswati. They are wonderful multitasking people who take on many roles, whose contribution to society and the future is crucial.
With the advent of the new millennium, female artists have obviously been welcomed not only by the crème de la crème of society, but also by the masses; reiterating this drift Siddhartha Tagore (Director – Gallery Art Konsult) says, “Female artists had started their rise to prominence since 2006. Many have become prominent artists not only in the Indian context but all over the world. Now, you see more artists coming up and I see a great future.”
Throughout these years, attempts have been made to treat women as equals to men, overlooking the fact that she is a unique creation in her own right and that nothing that differentiates her from men makes her weaker. The binaries are meant to complement each other, not compete with each other and this is the very soul of the exhibition. Celebrating this fearless and powerful spirit of creating fluid – woman, Dr Sanjay Gupta (Vice-Chancellor – World University of Design) says: “Over the past two decades we have seen policies and practices that advance the women’s rights in many ways, including giving women the space to claim their power. In the next few years, I think that in addition to continuing this work, we need to work with the men in power so that they feel comfortable with sharing their power. If men cannot be equal partners in this march towards equality, we will end up in a situation of men against women, which, in my opinion, is a mistaken conflict. This is also true in the art space, where men hold prominent positions in many institutions and enjoy the recognition and recognition that comes with it. fame. By making visible the work of women, including new generations of young female artists, we can pave the way for them to progress in their careers with ease and confidence. Every March, on Women’s Day, we start talking about women – I think we should consider women’s equality in workspaces, art galleries and museums as a practice that we can meaningfully engage with, every day, all year round.”
This art exhibition aims to celebrate the woman as an individual, her ambitions, her perfections and her imperfections while highlighting her struggles, challenges and endurance. It is a depiction of how a woman battles all obstacles through the different walks of life, yet she continues on this beautiful journey called life embracing self-love and self-care.
