Mark your calendars February 27-March 5 for the kick off of another year of 4-H in Guernsey County.
The 4-H Open House will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Buckeye Trail Elementary School with an awards ceremony at 7:30 p.m. More than 30 4-H members will share their experiences and knowledge gained thanks to 4- H project work.
The launch event is open to new and current 4-H families. Participants can consult one of more than 200 project books and enter to win a scholarship at half the price of a 4-H camp. Youth 8 and under can also participate in a Cloverbud activity.
Various activities are planned for the week-long event. A coloring contest will be organized for young people, divided into four age categories. The first 100 participants aged 5 to 8 will receive a participation gift. The top 3 entrants in the 9-19 age categories will receive a special 4-H prize. Special day promotional activities are also planned for the week. They understand:
- Social Media Sunday – Share how 4-H is celebrating 100 years in County Guernsey on social media.
- Memory Monday – Share a favorite 4-H memory, whether on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, a phone call, or over a good old cup of coffee.
- Take a Minute Tuesday – Take a few minutes today to think about 4-H projects students can sign up for this year. Check out the Ohio 4-H Project Center, https://projectcentral.ohio4h.org/.
- Workout Wednesday – Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Check out the 4-H Health Challenge at https://ohio4h.org/4thHChallenge.
- Thursday Bring a Friend – Bring a Friend to the 4-H kickoff from 6-7:30 p.m. at Buckeye Trail Elementary School.
- Fashion Friday – Wear your favorite 4-H clothes to school or work.
- Saturday Service – The OSU Guernsey County Extension Office is challenging every 4-H family who is able to donate $10 to our monetary donation campaign for GRACE Pantry. Donations can be made online at http://go.osu.edu/helpfighthunger or by sending a check payable to The Ohio State University at OSU Extension Guernsey County, PO Box 300, Old Washington, Ohio 43768. Collection will take place March 5-11.
There are many other ways to celebrate 4-H around the county. The Reading Makes the Best Better program will see teenage and adult volunteers visit schools in Guernsey County to share the importance of reading by reading books to every kindergarten class. Each child will also receive a free book to take home and information on how to join Cloverbuds.
The reading program gives every third grader in the county a free copy of “Charlotte’s Web” and information on how to join 4-H.
4-H alumni will share their 4-H experiences in live interviews on WCMJ 96FM and WWKC-FM KC105 each morning.
Guernsey County Commissioners have signed a proclamation proclaiming February 27 to March 5 as 4-H Week in Guernsey County and the courthouse will be lit green. Story Time with Sheriff Paden joins 4-H by reading a 4-H related story. The story will be available Tuesday at noon on the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page – Sheriff Jeffrey D. Paden.
