Tsutaya Books has a new IG-worthy outlet in KL with a cafe and more

With its breathtaking minimalist interiors, Tsutaya Books is widely regarded as one of the finest bookstores in the world. Visiting an outlet previously required a six-hour flight to Japan or Taiwan, but luckily with the opening of their new outlet in Kuala Lumpur – it will only take you a short ride to enter the sprawling and incredibly IG-worthy bookstore.

For the uninitiated, Tsutaya Books is Japan’s largest bookstore chain, and they’re world famous for their minimalist design and the way they organize the entire bookstore experience. They have over 1,400 outlets in Japan, Taiwan and China, but this is their first outlet so close to home!

In the extensive library you will find exhibition spaces and a curated line of Japanese lifestyle products, including stationery, home decor, and other souvenirs. As you explore the store, don’t be surprised to find teapots, perfumes or cute mugs with cartoon cats on display.

There is also a gallery display which showcases works by different artists each month, with the current exhibition spotlighting Tokyo-based photographer Kotori Kawashima, Han the Craftsman’s “UFO” paper-cut artworks, and the “Humana Tour” collection.

The bookstore also houses the IVY Tokyo Cafewhich serves artisanal drinks and Japanese sweets, to enjoy a matcha latte or a dorayaki when you’re done exploring space (Where when you open a new novel!).

For bibliophiles, this point of sale is also stocked with more than 240,000 books, and if you’re struggling to choose one, the store has a team of expert concierges who can offer personalized, gender-specific recommendations.
