Wayland and Sudbury Town Criers to End Print Editions

WAYLAND, MA – The only printed newspapers covering Sudbury and Wayland will be sold out this spring.

The weekly Sudbury Town Crier and Wayland Town Crier, founded in 1951, will go digital only on May 5. The paper’s parent company, Wicked Local, owned by Gannett, announced the move on Wednesday. Gannett will also cease print editions of the Newton Tab, Watertown Tab & Press and Needham Times.

“This business decision reaffirms The Wayland Town Crier’s commitment to the sustainable future of local news,” the company said. “The Wayland Town Crier and its parent company, Gannett, understand that many readers value and depend on the news and information they find in their print products each week. advertisers.”

A recent report by media watchdog Dan Kennedy also revealed Gannett’s plan to withdraw from local coverage in Massachusetts, instead focusing on regional news.

The Town Crier’s former owner, GateHouse, merged with Gannett in 2019. Gannett has since taken cost-cutting action at newspapers across the country. This week, the chain cut 180 jobs at newspaper mills in Wisconsin, moving printing operations from that state to Illinois.
