California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has tried to take a swipe at states that ban books with controversial content, but he has been mocked and ridiculed online.
Newsom posted a photo of himself reading a book with a stack of three others that had recently been censored in other states.
“Read banned books to understand what these states are so afraid of,” Newsom tweeted.
Among the books was “Maus,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Holocaust removed from the curriculum of a public school on grounds of profanity, nudity and depictions of violence.
While the tweet received approval from more than 115,000 users who “liked” Newsom’s tweet, others took the opportunity to rip the Governor.
“It’s like that video of Lebron reading Malcolm X. Ask him about the plot of the books,” joked Ben Shapiro.
“People are having fun on this, but I think it’s very brave for the new governor to finish his grade 7 and 8 reading homework. It’s never too late to finish your studies, governor!” joked Beckett Adams.
“Posing for a photo because running on culture wars is better than my atrocious response to the pandemic”, read a popular response.
“Me too, I love to read all my books at the restaurant of the Indigo hotel”, responded writer Taylor Kay Phillips.
“It reads To Kill a Mockingbird and 1984 dawg hope you do well in your college English class project,” joked another user.
Some underline that Newsom included “To Kill a Mockingbird”, which had been banned schools in a California city about the racist words used in the story.
Still others noted that it was those on the left who banned these books in some regions from the country.
“Yeah, uh, it was woke Democrats who banned To Kill A Mockingbird from the required reading lists here in WA”, responded Jason Rantz.
While Newsom was concerned about his ill-informed book photo op, his California voters suffered some of the highest gas prices in the nation, due to fuel tax share that the Democratic-controlled legislature refuses to suspend.
